A.K.A. (Also Known As)
Let’s chat about the many hilarious Dachshund Nicknames. I don’t think there is a single dog breed that has more call names than a Dachshund. Don’t tell anyone I said this, but sometimes dog people take themselves a little too seriously. I was just reading an article about dog food and in the discussion forum, someone asked a question about what kind of food to feed a Dotson. Well, let’s not mention any names, but someone from the dog community spent the next three paragraphs fussing at that poor fella for not knowing how to say Dachshund. What happened to good manners? What happened to a sense of humor? Aww, heck.. let’s let our hair down and have a good giggle! Who knows, maybe we’ll learn a little something, too.
Hey! Who are You Calling a Weiner?
Weiner Dog, Wiener Dog and Weenie Dog are three of the most common terms I’ve heard throughout my tenure as a Dachshund FANATIC. In all honesty, just about everybody knows that the actual hot dog was named after a dachshund.. not the other way around. From everything I’ve read on the internet, it appears that German’s pretty much get the credit for making the original sausage that came to be known as the hot dog. It stands to reason that they would name it after a German dog that is round and long, doesn’t it? There is actually a great article about the weiner dogs that you EAT that can give you some insight on how the two came to be.
The Typo Puppies
Aww, the infamous misspellings of our breed. The most common is the daschund. I have to admit, occasionally my fingers get tripped up and spell it wrong, too. The other typos or misspellings I commonly see: dachsund, dashund, doxon, dauschund. Would it surprise you that google reports that over 1,000 people use their search engine to look for a Doxon?
Right about now, you’re wondering, “how the heck do you spell it?” It’s Dachshund. lol
We talking about Cars or Dogs?
In comparison, Datsun is a car company that is now known as Nissan. Dotson is one of the most popular NICKNAMES of a dachshund dog. I don’t think one has anything to do with the other, but I still thought it was good to know.
What Did you Say?
I’ve heard lots of people refer to a Dachshund as a dash hound. Unless German is your second language, I can totally understand how that happens. I mean, they are hounds, right?
Wondering how to pronounce Dachshund? It sounds like this.. docks-hund. or dox-send. (depends on your accent:).
Doxie is definitely the most commonly used (and accepted) nickname of the precocious Weiner Dog. (I have even seen this spelled Dachsie.) Probably because, it’s about a million times easier to spell…and pronounce, come to think of it! The moral of the story is, no matter what you call them.. enjoy them!
