Dog Teeth Care Tips for Dachshund Owners

Dog teeth care is a very important topic to discuss at any time, but February is Pet Dental Month so I thought I would share some tips and links with you on the subject of Dachshund Dental Hygiene. I have often said that so much emphasis is put on the Dachshund’s back trouble that we tend to overlook their teeth trouble. Dachshunds, as is with any dog, tend to have dental needs just like you and I. This is something that your vet should keep an eye on when you go in for annual check ups, but there are also some important steps you can take to prevent the trouble right at home. Don’t overlook Dog Teeth Care.

Importance of Dental Health and Your Dachshund

dog teeth care tipsWhether you’re talking about human teeth or dog teeth care, there are certain things you can’t overlook.  If left unclean and unchecked, bacteria and plaque deposits build up on your pets teeth causing cavities and gum diseases like gingivitis. As gum disease progresses, teeth eventually become loose and may fall out. Causing pain and discomfort. There are signs you might notice with your pet if he has dental problems. Bad breath and reddening of the gums may be the first outward sign of a problem. You may also notice that your pet is not enjoying his food, disinclined to eat, dribbling, pawing at the mouth, or just generally unhappy.

Prevention is the Key

There are some wonderful things that you can start doing for you Dachshund now that will help when they begin to age. I would say that dry, crunchy, good quality dog food is the number one thing that will keep Fido’s teeth and gums healthy and strong! Chew toys and rawhides are AWESOME for keeping teeth and gums clean, too. There are even toys in the pet section at Wal-Mart that are pet dental hygiene and my dogs really enjoyed them.  It doesn’t take a lot of money to provide your pet with healthy preventative products.  Petsmart has a whole little section for dog teeth care products.

Another great option for keeping your dogs teeth healthy would be to brush them at home on a regular basis. My vet sells tooth brush kits, but you can also find them at Revival. As a matter of fact, they have a whole section for Dental Products for your pet.
