Longhaired Dachshunds
Longhaired Dachshunds
A Miniature Long Haired Dachshund is above all my favorite little weiner dog. Soft, flowing coats. Sweet little faces. Great personalities. But, mostly….it’s the ears! I love them. I don’t think there is much in this world that is prettier than a Long Haired Miniature Dachshund! (But, don’t tell that to our wirehaired and smooth coat doxies!) Research claims that the Smooth Coat Dachshund was bred to small type long haired spaniels hundreds of years ago to produce a Long Haired Dachshund that would stand up to cold weather and cold water during hunting seasons. What resulted was the elegant Long Haired Dachshunds. Long Haired Dachshund breeders must have had their hands full. Retaining all the qualities of a Dachshund with a calmer demeanor like the spaniel ancestors. I think they did a great job. They diligently bred out any foreign characteristics from the spaniels. Truly preserving the Dachshund breed. In 1923, the Long Haired Dachshund had a major win at Crufts in England. This sky rocketed the popularity of the Long Haired version of our breed. It finally brought attention to the calm, regal beauty of a longhaired dachshund. Click here to learn more about longhaired dachshund history. Genetically, this is a recessive trait. Both parents must show or carry the long haired gene to produce miniature longhaired dachshund puppies. They make VERY pretty puppies!
Do Longhaired Dachshunds Shed?
Long Haired Doxies are very easy to care for. Requiring very little grooming. You’ll want to keep their hair brushed to avoid tangles. They do not require professional grooming, but groomers can be great for general maintenance. (bathing and nail clipping, etc.) Longhaired Dachshunds are very low shedders! Most resources will tell you that they shed even less than the smooth coat! The long haired dachshund temperament is the ultimate star of our breed and will melt the heart of even the most die hard smooth coat dachshund fan. Chloe is my most treasured house pet. She is spoiled rotten and single handedly responsible for my passion as longhaired Dachshund Breeder and owner. I have never been more in love. Even though, she probably prefers my dad over me most of the time! LOL
