Solid Colored Dachshunds
There’s Something Different About That Dachshund
Solid Colored Dachshunds are Dachshunds that lack the usual tan “points”. Such as a Black and Tan…with no tan! Just Solid Shiny Black from one end to the other. Same goes with the Solid Chocolate Dachshund Puppies, the Solid Isabella Dachshund Puppy, and the Solid Blue Dachshund. Solid..no tan points make them one of a kind and a pleasure to own and produce. They are so very pretty and unique, but in a more subtle way. Not flashy and bright like the Dapples and the Piebalds, but Classic and Sleek in their own right. There are many trains of thought on how Solid Colored Dachshunds came to be. I really believe that a Solid Dachshund breeds like a Dominant pattern. Meaning that one of the parents must be a solid to produce solid Dachshund puppies. As a breeder of Solid colored Dachshunds, this has been my experience as to how the gene shows itself. You have to keep in mind that these are my opinions. There are many articles you can find on the Internet that will tell you that Solid Colored Dachshunds were first developed by breeding (for example) a black and tan dachshunds that has very muted tan points to another dog of the same. And so on and so on.. until the puppies eventually became solid colored. They could be right, but I think they are forgetting the total history of how Dachshunds came to be. Not just the colors they come in. Wirehaired Dachshunds are said to have been produced using small terrier type dogs bred to Smooth Dachshunds. Long Haired Dachshunds are said to have been produced using small long haired spaniels. It occurs to me that both small terriers like the Scottish Terrier and small spaniels like the Irish Setter or the Sussex Spaniel for instance, come in SOLID colors. It only stands to reason that the solid colors were already in the genetic code of the Dachshund. Through selective breeding they have become more prevalent in recent years. I believe people are truly embracing solid colored dachshunds because of their subtle beauty.
Still working on Solid Colored Dachshunds
2013 UPDATE: After years of work, we have finally produced our very first Solid Blue Dachshund! We’ve named him Waylon. He’s so impossibly pretty. I couldn’t be happier. He’s pictured above.
